Description including Unit Aims

This is a compulsory 100cp unit and an integral part of a 180cp MRes in Advanced Composites. This unit comprises an extended individual research project, which serves to prepare the students for their subsequent PhD project. It is a six-month undertaking and commences officially on 1st June each year.

The aim of the unit is to provide the opportunity for a substantial and original piece of research work of engineering relevance at Master’s level. It may be wholly research or include aspects of novel design, and/ or systems engineering, which is orientated towards theoretical and/or experimental work. Integral to this project are project management skills, communication skills, reasoning skills, originality and creativity in problem solving. Students are also expected to maintain a high standard of record keeping and management of information through an individual logbook.

Intended Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of the unit, the students will be able to: - undertake an original research activity - plan and prepare a concise, written technical report in the format of a journal paper - orally present the technical subject, including handling questions and tailoring technical and specialist knowledge and information to a broader audience - adopt a high standard of record keeping and management of information.
