Description including Unit Aims

The unit will develop students' understanding of integral calculus, differential equations, vectors and matrices to a level equivalent to QCA level 3. The unit will prepare students on foundation and preliminary year programmes for entry or progression into higher level qualifications in the physical, life or biomedical sciences that require a more advanced understanding of mathematics.

Intended Learning Outcomes

By the end of the unit students be able to:

  1. integrate simple functions and demonstrate an understanding of the physical meaning of the integral
  2. manipulate and use matrices
  3. use vectors
  4. manipulate and use complex numbers

Teaching Information

Students will attend 3 hours of study per week. Learning is facilitated in sessions involving a combination of teacher-led input, combined with practical, workshop-style exercises. On-line delivery of materials through Blackboard VLE.

Assessment Information

Formative Assessment:

  • Regular problem sheets, with feedback provided during weekly seminars

Summative Assessment:

  • Written examination (30%) ILOs 2, 4
  • Written examination (70%) ILOs 1, 3
