Pre-requisites

Successful completion of Year 3

A mark of 68 or greater in Research Project 3 would normally be expected, or for the student to have taken a year abroad in their third year to be able to undertake this unit.

Supervisors need to be agreed in advance with both the supervisor and the unit director before this unit can be undertaken.

Description including Unit Aims

The aim of this unit is to enable students to further develop the skills of managing a significant technical problem that is loosely defined, and the solution, or method of approach, that has much that is unknown.

Intended Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of the project, students will;

1. be able to explain in depth the topic of their project,

2. have developed research skills and problem-solving abilities to a high level,

3. be able to solve independently the typical problems of a large project,

4. have developed/reinforced their theoretical, analytical, computational and/or experimental skills through application,

5. be very competent at writing an engineering research paper,

6. have enhanced their oral presentation skills.
