Description including Unit Aims

• To have knowledge of the principles of critical appraisal, evidence based medicine and principles of study design as relevant to clinical medicine and dentistry
• To have knowledge of the range of disorders which affect the oral mucosa and the surrounding oro-facial tissues and how they are diagnosed and managed.
• To have knowledge of how systemic disease may manifest within the oral cavity and surrounding structures and how they are diagnosed and managed.
• To have knowledge to understanding of how systemic disease may impact the dental management of patients and the consequent modifications to such treatment that may be required.
• To gain a sound understanding of a selection of advanced histological techniques relevant to the practice of oral pathology.
• To show competency in the histopathological diagnosis of a selection of more complex oral lesions and disease processes.

Intended Learning Outcomes

1. Define the indications for, relevant advantages and disadvantages of imaging investigations in the context of clinical oral medicine and oral pathology practice.

2. Define the indications for, relevant advantages and disadvantages of tissue based investigations in the context of clinical oral medicine and diagnostic oral pathology.

3. To have a sound understanding of the methodology of selected histopathological techniques relevant to the practice of Oral Medicine and Pathology.

3. Define the indications for, relevant advantages and disadvantages of blood based investigations in the context of clinical oral medicine practice.

4. Define the indications for, relevant advantages and disadvantages of microbiological sampling based investigations in the context of clinical oral medicine practice.

5. Define the indications for, relevant the indications, contraindications and limitations of investigations requested through allied medical specialties such as, but not limited to: Contact urticarial testing, Epicutaneous patch testing with relevance to the clinical practice of Oral Medicine.

6. Define the indications for, relevant advantages and disadvantages, relative and absolute contraindications of both surgical and medical treatment options with relevance to the clinical practice of Oral Medicine.

7. To show competence in the microscopic assessment and description of a selection of relevant oral lesions and oral disease processes.

8. To gain insight into the multidisciplinary team management of patients presenting with oral pre-malignancy and malignancy.

Teaching Information

• Work based experiential learning:

Clinical chairside teaching -Consultant clinics in CLINICAL ORAL MEDICINE encompassing reflection and personalised feedback. Work placed based assessment with a grade (Graded A –E) awarded based on overall performance, professional conduct and on presentation and discussion of a single case on a 4 weekly basis. Peer based learning will occur at clinical meetings and at the chairside (CC)

• Specialist multidisciplinary out- patient clinics. ( MDC)
• Observational work shadowing (pathology laboratory and clinical staff)
• Supervised oral pathology reporting
• Practical lab techniques

Classroom based small group teaching:

• Clinical meetings:

o Students can participate in the detailed discussion of difficult clinical problems.

o Journal Club to discuss journal articles, research.

o Participation in clinical governance& management activity & meetings.

o Participation in clinic-pathological meetings

• Feedback and personalized support through tutor/ mentor meetings on a regular basis. (FAPS)
• Self-directed learning

o Oral disease lecture course Clinical Oral Medicine/ Maxillofacial Surgery/ Pathology/ Radiology/ Special Needs selected lectures available on MEDIADENT. Students would be expected to complete self- directed learning with 1 to 1 support and guidance from Lecturers. We would expect 1-2 hours pre reading and 1-2 hours follow up per lecture/ topic teaching.

o Accessing NICE, SIGN, GMC and GDC published guidance and relevant literature.

• External courses and teaching:

o Medical emergencies and Basic Life Support by local certified trainers (NHS UHBristol)

Assessment Information

Summative Assessment within 'the Unit of Advanced Oral Medicine and Oral Pathology

• Alternate monthly Clinical Evaluation Exercise (MiniCEX) for Oral Medicine and diagnostic evaluation exercise for Oral Pathology based on overall performance, professional conduct and on presentation and discussion of a clinical case. (20% of total mark)
• Oral Medicine clinical case presentation of a single patient at the chairside followed by histopathological work up and case presentation of the patient’s biopsy. This is a work place based assessment with a mark based on overall performance, professional conduct and on presentation and discussion. (20% of total mark)
• Unseen examination: Multiple short answer questions - 10 questions of 10 marks each of combined Oral Medicine/Pathology questions (90mins). (40% of total mark)
• 2,500 word combined essay reflecting clinical experience and knowledge of laboratory preparation, diagnostic histopathology of selected oral pathologies. (20% of total mark)
