This unit will enable participants registered on the University's Teaching and Learning in HE programme to pursue a topic of interest and relevance to them and their working context with the support of individual supervision. It is intended to provide opportunities to study an area that falls outside of the existing unit specifications, and to facilitate extended action research, reflection and scholarship in a departmental context and subject culture.
On successful completion of this unit participants will have developed their understanding of their chosen topic or issue. They will have gained experience and some competency in conducting this exploration, and demonstrated their ability to articulate their findings and related ideas cogently and critically.
The Supervised Individual Study will normally be conducted independently on the basis of an appropriate number of one-to-one meetings with the tutor who is supervising the student.
The student’s work for assessment on this unit will comprise a paper of 4,000 words or equivalent, which takes the form of a report or any other product or combination of products which demonstrate that the student has developed his or her ability to explore analytically an appropriate issue or area of professional and/or academic interest.
Key readings will be determined by the topic being investigated and are therefore not generic to the supervised individual study mode.
