This unit is only taught on the Diploma in Dental Hygiene.
Year 2
Elements:
This unit will commence in year two and will cover aspects of systemic and localised common oral disease/disorders which affect dental management and be competent to make referrals to appropriate health professionals.
This unit also comprises of dental hard tissue loss (i.e. dental caries) with specific relevance to the Dental Hygienist in recognition, management/ advice and referral to appropriate health professionals. This incorporates the mechanisms of action and uses of fluoride in the prevention and treatment of dental caries.
Aims:
The aim of this unit is to develop abilities in management of own time/ resources and inspire professional research skills, analytical thought processes and development of a commitment to lifelong learning.
Students can recognise abnormality and appreciate when urgency of referral is required.

Formative:
Dental Caries
Continuous assessment (CA) on clinic using a predetermined standard assessment scheme, graded with immediate feedback to the student by clinical staff.
Students overall performance in the programme will be reviewed and discussed at the School Progress committee.
Failure to comply with completion of formative assessments by the stated end of term deadlines will be raised at the Progress Committee. Any performance not completed or deemed unsatisfactory will be reviewed along with the students overall performance and may affect the students progression. Fluoride
CA - students attend specialist Clinics to see patients in year 2 term 2.
Recognition of Malignant & Potentially Malignant Lesions

Summative:
This unit has no internal summative assessment. However Oral Health Sciences topics can be assessed within Finals examinations for the Diploma in Dental Hygiene.
