Description including Unit Aims

This unit provides an introduction to the field of artificial intelligence (AI) from the persepctive of logic programming. The first half covers the basic principles of knowledge representation and automated inference with the Prolog programming language. The second half covers some more advanced methods in machine learning which exploit the representation and resoning power of Prolog.

Intended Learning Outcomes

After successfully completing this unit, the student will be able to:

  1. Understand the main techniques for intelligent reasoning and learning using logic-based knowledge representation.
  2. Implement and apply these techniques to solve practical problems by means of the declarative programming language Prolog.

Teaching Information

2 hours of lectures per week; 2 hours of unsupervised labs per week with access to a helpdesk

Assessment Information

2-hour written exam (50%) assessing learning outcome (1). Three programming assignments (10%, 15% and 25%) assessing learning outcome(2).
