Description including Unit Aims

This unit is only taught on the Diploma in Dental Hygiene.

Year 1

1) General Anatomy & Physiology

2) Regional Anatomy

3) Oral & Dental Anatomy & Physiology

4) Oral/ Dental Embryology & Histology

Aspects encompassed in this unit are of relevance to the clinical practice of Dental Hygiene.

Aims:

To provide an introduction to the fundamentals of biomedical sciences with relevance specifically to the working practice of the dental hygienist.

Intended Learning Outcomes

  • To apply to the practice of dental hygiene principles that derive from the biomedical, behavioural and materials sciences.
  • To describe relevant and appropriate dental, oral, craniofacial and general anatomy and explain their application to patient management.
  • To describe relevant and appropriate physiology and explain its application to patient management.
  • To recognise abnormalities of the oral cavity and the rest of the patient and raise concerns where appropriate.
  • To identify normal and abnormal facial growth, physical, mental and dental development and explain their significance.
