You are expected to attend at least 80% of the lectures and fieldtrips throughout the Diploma course and to attend all the sessions of the Archaeological Survey Unit. You are required to keep a notebook throughout the two years of your Diploma course. In Year 1, the notebook (=Assessment No. 5) will contain a record of your monthly fieldtrips along with a summary of the methodologies and techniques employed in the field during the Archaeological Survey Unit (accompanied by relevant field notes, record sheets, sketches, plans, etc.). In Year 2, the notebook (=Assessment No. 11) will contain details of your excavation experience, which has been undertaken during the two years of the Diploma course (i.e. 10 days excavation).
In summary, the notebook will be handed in at the end of each year and will contain:
Year 1 (i) Record of fieldtrips. (ii) Survey methodology, techniques and field notes (Survey Unit). Year 2 Record of excavation experience.
AIMS OF THE FIELDTRIPS
You will make field visits each month to sites, monuments and landscapes. These visits will be related to previous lectures in your course and are designed to enhance your knowledge and understanding of the specific topic that is being studied.
Your notebook will demonstrate that you understand the chronologies and landscape contexts of the sites visited. You will be aware of any archaeological research that has been carried out on the site and you will understand its interpretation.

Students are required to submit The Field Course Notebook which is to be handed in at the end of each year.
The notebook should be presented in a ring binder with word processed text, so that additional information can be easily added as site visits progress throughout each year.
Please use plastic pockets only for including additional information, such as bulky leaflets. Do not use otherwise!
Each fieldtrip should be presented individually using dividers.
It should contain specific notes acquired from your site visits.
You should enhance the notes you take in the field with some research of your own and not merely reproduce the tutor’s explanations given on the fieldtrip or solely use information that is downloaded from the internet.
Relevant photographs, maps, drawings, plans etc. should be captioned and referenced.
Please do not include photographs on a CD or loose photographs.
