Completion of a dissertation should provide students with applied experience of the processes of scholarship and the ability to use the sources and original materials consulted effectively. Depending on the subject selected, the dissertation is intended to enable the student to develop an awareness of and skills in appropriate areas which may include: archival research, visual analysis, art historical and cultural studies, site specific investigation, garden and landscape surveys, conservation assessment, the interpretation and presentation of gardens and landscapes as cultural artefacts, the application of historical and critical approaches to understanding the social, cultural and intellectual contexts in which landscapes and gardens have been created and their receptions.
Students are assigned an adviser whom they consult during the research period.
Assessment is by the completed dissertation of 15,000 words, taking account of the scholarly presentation and standards appropriate to the subject.
