Description including Unit Aims

The unit will introduce students to a range of questions concerning the generic identity and aesthetic issues of Romantic literary texts. Particular attention will be paid to the influence of Romantic writers on nineteenth-century and twentieth-century culture. Topics might include: mixed modes and fragments, Gothic, dream vision, lyric, epic, literary influence, politics of language, the sublime. Like others in this programme, this unit will be structured so as to combine these issues with a sharply focused reading of a wide range of canonical and less well-known writers and texts.
