Description including Unit Aims

This unit will study a wide range of comic texts, by Corneille, Molihre, Marivaux and Beaumarchais and their contemporaries, exploring how and why dramatists of the period sought to make people (the general public, the intelligentsia and the court) laugh. In investigating this, account will be taken of contemporary and more recent theories of the comic (Corneille, Molihre, Diderot, Beaumarchais, Bergson, Bakhtine, etc.).There will be some emphasis on the texts as performance works and attention paid to the more recent history of their performances and to different approaches to modern production of plays from this period.
