Description including Unit Aims

This Unit:

  • engages with and critically evaluates David Boschs proposal for a new ecumenical paradigm;
  • Explores the biblical basis of mission through engagement with Bosch's analysis of Scripture;
  • Highlights the importance of contextualization and its role in todays global Christian world;
  • Discusses the importance of a transformative, integrated approach to the church's mission;
  • Analyses the challenges to mission of postmodern approaches to truth and epistemology.

Intended Learning Outcomes

On completion of the unit students should:

  • Appreciate the need for a paradigm shift in the church's thinking about mission if it is to relate meaningfully to a postmodern context;
  • Be able to handle biblical texts about mission critically and confidently;
  • Grasp the breadth of the church's mission in many modes and be able to apply this thinking in their own mission practice;
  • Have a thoughtful and self-critical understanding of the historical paradigms of mission.

Teaching Information

The unit will be taught through interactive seminars, including a variety of media such as DVD, the Internet, case studies. Students are expected to have completed prior reading and to come ready to discuss it.

Assessment Information

Formative assessment will be through engagement with prior reading and exercises of private study which are then discussed, with tutor feedback, in class.

Summative assessment will be through an essay of 6,000 words.
