Description including Unit Aims

The Greek orator Lysias was renowned in antiquity for beguiling audiences with the apparent artlessness of his prose. This combination—of relatively easy Greek and highly sophisticated rhetoric—makes Lysias an ideal author for study at B1 level. In this unit, we’ll study Lysias’ speech On the Murder of Erasothenes, in which a cuckolded husband who has killed his wife’s lover defends himself against the charge of murder.

Unit aims:

• To expand and confirm students’ knowledge of Attic prose syntax.

• To expand students’ vocabulary in ancient Greek.

• To increase students ability and confidence in reading continuous, unaltered ancient Greek texts.

• To introduce students to ancient rhetoric and the work of Lysias in particular

Intended Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this unit students will be able to:

1. demonstrate advanced language skills in reading and translating ancient Greek texts, both at sight and with the aid of grammar and lexicon
2. identify and analyse an increased range of Greek syntactical structures
3. use dictionary, grammar and commentary to produce practical criticism of a passage of Greek at a standard appropriate to level H
4. use secondary literature in the production of independent interpretations.
5. demonstrate communication skills in both oral and written presentations, discussions and written assignments.

4 hours of Lectures, seminars and reading classes, grammatical instruction classes weekly

• 1x Practical Criticism Exercise – 2000 words (50%) (ILOs 1, 3-5)
• 1x 90 minute Exam (50%) (ILOs 1-5)
