Description including Unit Aims

This is an independent research project of 4-5 months duration. It builds on earlier taught and practical training allowing students to develop their independent research skills. In many cases the project will lead into a PhD project. The project may be carried in conjunction with, or at the laboratories of one of our partners as a "research placement". Such a placement gives students exposure to the rigours of a professional research environment outside the Universities of Bristol and Bath, and give the opportunity to sample life within an industrial company.

Intended Learning Outcomes

On completion of a successful project, the students will be able to:

  • design experiments or calculations.
  • plan a research project.
  • apply the appropriate techniques and carry of investigations.
  • demonstrate time management skills.
  • keep good laboratory notebooks.
  • write-up work for reporting purposes.

Teaching Information

Research project with ongoing supervision provided by project supervisor and associates.

Assessment Information

Formative assessment. After one month students will submit a 1000 word literature survey and outline plan for the remainder of the project.

Summative assessment. Final report of about 5000 words (80%) and logbooks (20%). Both assessments carried out by university supervisor and second examiner.
