Description including Unit Aims

This Unit of Teaching takes place in Year 2 and will comprise of the following 2 Elements and their general aims:

Element of Operative Skills Year 2 - Term 3

To provide students with the biological and clinical knowledge underpinning operative dentistry so that they will have acquired the skills to enable them ultimately to enter the clinical teaching programme.

Additional aims will include that students will develop an understanding of the clinical techniques required in the management of cavities in posterior and anterior teeth and be able to demonstrate a knowledge and understanding of, and competence in, the construction of extra-coronal restorations.

Element of Prosthetic Skills Year 2 - Term 3

Prosthetic skills deals with the replacement of acquired and congenital defects of dental and other orofacial tissues by means of removable prostheses (dentures). In this element of teaching students should acquire sufficient knowledge and skill to describe how dentures are made.

Additional aims will include ensuring that students have a knowledge of the nature and variety of dental prostheses and how these relate to the applied anatomy in relation to prosthetic dentistry.

Applied Dental Materials will be an integrated part of both elements.

Detailed Aims:

1. Prosthetics Skills

This component should enable the student to have knowledge of:

  • The nature and variety of dental prostheses.
  • Applied anatomy in relation to prosthetic dentistry
  • Prosthodontics materials and the methods of their manipulation.
  • Clinical and laboratory procedures and associated technology involved in the provision of dentures.

2. Operative Dentistry

The aims of this course are as follows:

  • To build on the skills and experience gained in the Basic Biomaterials Course and in the basic Periodontology (Periodontology 2) section of the Restorative Skills Element.
  • To develop an understanding of the clinical techniques required in the management of cavities in posterior and anterior teeth.
  • To develop knowledge and understanding of the procedures and materials required to restore teeth by direct and indirect techniques. Students should be able to demonstrate their competency in the technical aspects of these procedures in simulated clinical environments.
  • To ensure each student can demonstrate their ability to work safely in the dental laboratory.
  • To demonstrate a knowledge and understanding in the handling and use of instruments and materials used in the Clinical Skills Laboratory.

3. Applied Dental Materials

  • To produce a student who has the ability to select and handle biomaterials in a safe, cost effective and clinically appropriate manner.
  • To produce a student who can evaluate current and future biomaterials in the light of a sound knowledge of basic materials and biomaterials science.
  • To produce a student who can obtain appropriate information about biomaterials and communicate relevant information to peers, patients and the lay public.

Intended Learning Outcomes

At the end of Year 2 a successful student should gain knowledge and understanding in the following areas:

Prosthetic Skills

By the end of the second term of Year 2, the successful student will be able to demonstrate the following learning outcomes:

  • Identify relevant and appropriate dental, oral, craniofacial and general anatomy and explain their application to patient management (1.16)
  • Recognise the scientific principles underpinning the use of materials and biomaterials and evaluate their limitations and selection, with emphasis on those used in dentistry (1.1.10)
  • Create an oral environment where restoration or replacement of the tooth is viable (1.14.3)

Operative Dentistry

By the end of the second term of Year 2, the successful student will be able to demonstrate the following learning outcomes:

  • Recognise the scientific principles underpinning the use of materials and biomaterials and evaluate their limitations and selection, with emphasis on those used in dentistry (1.1.10)
  • Where appropriate, restore the dentition using the principle of minimal intervention, to a standard that promotes the longevity of the restoration or prostheses (1.14.4)
  • Manage restorative procedures that preserve tooth structure, replace missing or effective tooth structure, maintain function, are aesthetic and long lasting and promote soft and hard tissue health. (1.14.5)

Applied Dental Materials

By the end of the second term of Year 2, the successful student will be able to demonstrate the following learning outcomes:

  • Explain, evaluate and apply the principles of an evidence base approach to learning, clinical and professional practice and decision making (1.1.1)

This unit contributes to delivery and assessment of the following General Dental Council learning outcomes as specified in Preparing for Practice:

Teaching Information

A range of teaching are used in the unit including:

Lectures

Predominantly didactic teaching, with some student interaction, for theory teaching.

Tutorials

Small group teaching may taking place immediately before a session with particular emphasis in Year 2 domains set out by the General Dental Council (GDC).

In some disciplines nominated students are expected to lead a tutorial with a presentation on a specified subject to generate discussion amongst the group which will be led by teaching staff. Tutorials running with specified programmes are identified in Element handbooks and timetables are posted on blackboard.

Simulated clinical demonstration

This method is used extensively to teach the principles of peridontology on oral hygiene and non-surgical debridement, cavity preparation and placement techniques of restorative materials.

Technical demonstration

This method is used to teach the principles of removable and fixed prosthodontics.

PowerPoint presentations

This newer teaching aid has been introduced where visual material is projected showing a detailed staged technique of the clinical procedure. One of the teaching staff provides a commentary on the procedure.

CAL Programmes

These are available on line to aid students in their revision.

Dental Skills Manual

The Dental Skills Manual (DLM) is designed to increase the preparedness and maximise learning from practical sessions in the Dental School by providing information and resources on the context, processes and techniques involved.

Assessment Information

Formative Assessments:

Continuous Simulated Clinical Assessment during the Operative Dentistry teaching.

MCQ’s during prosthetic teaching:

  • Health and Safety
  • Alginate Impression Material
  • Gypsum Materials
  • Dental Aesthetics
  • Articulators
  • Recording Patient Information

Summative Assessments:

The summative assessments for Dental Skills Year 2 Unit fall within the combined Dental Skills/PCD ‘Capstone’ Assessment.
