Description including Unit Aims

This experimental unit comprises 3 group-based modules that will enable the students to have key training in equipment and computation-led experiments that represent the cutting edge of T&A in chemical synthesis. The experiments will include (a) Automated Reaction Optimisation; (b) Application of new Computational Technologies in Chemical Synthesis and (c) New Reactor Technology-Driven Synthesis co-created with industrial partners to represent real world chemical challenges. This experimental work will be supported by training in the use of Electronic Lab Notebooks.

Intended Learning Outcomes

Give students the experience of:

(a) Automated Reaction Optimisation

(b) Application of new Computational Technologies in Chemical Synthesis

(c) New Reactor Technology-Driven Synthesis

(d) Electronic Lab Notebooks (ELNs)

Confidence to propose potential integration of these techniques in their PhD research projects.

Teaching Information

Predominantly lab-based work supported by hands-on workshops on experimental techniques.

Assessment Information

Coursework linked to 3 lab rotations, weighted at 33.3%, using a mark assessment scheme of 0-100; pass at 50.

How much time the unit requires
Each credit equates to 10 hours of total student input. For example a 20 credit unit will take you 200 hours of study to complete. Your total learning time is made up of contact time, directed learning tasks, independent learning and assessment activity.

Assessment
The Board of Examiners will consider all cases where students have failed or not completed the assessments required for credit. The Board considers each student's outcomes across all the units which contribute to each year's programme of study. If you have self-certificated your absence from an assessment, you will normally be required to complete it the next time it runs (this is usually in the next assessment period).
The Board of Examiners will take into account any extenuating circumstances and operates within the Regulations and Code of Practice for Taught Programmes.
