Description including Unit Aims
- To acquire knowledge and understanding of advanced laboratory and histopathological techniques relevant to the practice of Oral Pathology.
- To acquire knowledge and develop competencies in the histopathological diagnosis of more complex oral lesions and also of systemic diseases that may manifest to the clinician with signs and symptoms within the oral cavity.
- To acquire knowledge and develop competencies in the pathological diagnosis and multidisciplinary team work up and management of patients presenting with Oral malignancy.
Intended Learning Outcomes
- Select appropriate laboratory investigations and tests to facilitate histopathological diagnosis
- To show competence in the microscopic assessment and description of relevant oral disease processes.
- To become competent in the macroscopic examination and description of common oral cancer resection specimens
- To gain an understanding of the pathological staging of patients diagnosed with oral malignancy
- To gain knowledge and gain an understanding of the workings and interactions of the multidisciplinary team in the diagnosis and management of patients with oral malignancy
- To appreciate the circumstances when cytological assessment is a useful adjunctive technique for diagnosis of patients who may present with Head and neck malignancy.
Teaching Information
Students will be supervised at all times in clinical and laboratory settings.
- Work based experiential learning:
Clinical/laboratory teaching – Shadowing of Consultant Pathologists, specialist trainees and biomedical scientists encompassing opportunity for reflection and personalised feedback. Presentation and discussion of a single biopsy case on a 4 weekly basis. Peer based learning will occur at clinical meetings and within the laboratory.
- Specialist multidisciplinary out- patient clinics.
- Classroom based small group teaching.
o Clinical meetings – Students can participate in the detailed discussion of difficult clinical problems.
o Journal Club to discuss journal articles, research.
‘Black box’ case presentation and discussion
- Participation in clinical governance & management activity & meetings.
- Participation in clinic-pathological meetings
- Observational work shadowing (clinical and laboratory staff supervised reporting)
- Practical lab techniques
- Feedback and personalised support through tutor/ mentor meetings on a regular basis.
- Self directed learning
o Advanced aspects of Oral disease lecture course Clinical Oral Medicine/Maxillofacial surgery/ Pathology/ Radiology/ Special Needs selected lectures available on Mediasite. Students would be expected to complete self- directed learning with 1 to 1 support and guidance from Lecturers. We would expect 1-2 hours pre reading and 1-2 hours follow up per lecture/ topic teaching.
o Accessing NICE, SIGN, GMC and GDC published guidance and relevant literature.

Assessment Information
Summative Assessment within 'the Unit of Advanced Oral Pathology
- Monthly diagnostic evaluation exercise for Oral Pathology based on overall performance, professional conduct and on presentation and discussion of the management and histopathological diagnosis of an unseen oral biopsy case. (20% of total mark)
- Histopathological work up and case presentation of two selected diagnostic cases. This is a work place based assessment with a mark based on overall performance demonstrating understanding of laboratory processing, diagnostic skills and clinical management. (20% of total mark)
- Unseen examination: Multiple short answer questions - 10 questions of 10 marks each (90mins). (40% of total mark)
- 2,500 word essay reflecting knowledge of laboratory preparation, diagnostic histopathology of selected oral pathologies and relevant literature review (20% of total mark)
