To advance to degree standard students’ active and passive ability in the language studied.
To sustain and build on oral fluency and listening skills acquired to date.
To develop students’ writing skills across a range of written tasks.
To perfect students’ skills in translation of texts (from literature and contemporary media).
Students will be proficient in the spoken and written language to degree standard. Students will be able to communicate fluently in the spoken language in both formal and informal registers. Students will have a high level of competence in using the written language in a range of tasks. Students will be sensitive to register and nuances of the language studied and will be able to reflect these in translation.
3 weekly contact hours dedicated to the development of key skills. Mostly seminar based with some lectures for the delivery of grammar lessons. Ongoing e-learning tasks via Blackboard.
100% examination – to test the 4 key skills – Translation; Composition; Guided Writing; Oral/Aural
1½ hour translation exam (25%)
1½ hour guided writing exam (25%)
2 hour composition exam (25%)
Oral/aural exam (25%) – 1 oral exam (70% of component) and 1 aural exam (30% of component)
Selection of dedicated material prepared in-house (SML).
Grammar texts and dictionaries as appropriate to language area.
