This unit is designed to provide an introduction to the politics, culture and society of Italy from World War II to the present day. The set text for the unit is Paul Ginsborg, Italy and its discontents 1980-2001 (Penguin).
In addition to furthering your knowledge of aspects of contemporary Italy, the unit is also designed to help you develop a variety of other skills that will be of use to you in other areas of your degree programme and in whichever career you decide to follow after university.
The unit will ask you to develop your ability to read critically, to consider issues from a range of perspectives, to appropriate new critical concepts and vocabulary, to see the relationships between diverse aspects of the material which we will study, and to engage fruitfully in discussions and debates engendered in the seminar class. Close study of the core text will provide you with basic information but it will also help you develop the skills listed above as well as your ability to extract and draw together the key points of an argument or issue.
