Description including Unit Aims
This unit will cover the theory and practical aspects of paediatric audiology in the NHS setting.
Aims:
- To provide students with an understanding of paediatric audiology services and the roles of the associated professionals
- To provide students with an understanding of child development
- To explore the effect of deafness on child development at both an early age and in the school situation
- To cover the principles of hearing screening programmes
- To allow students to choose and interpret the appropriate hearing test for a range of children, to construct a management plan and to explore communication issues with families
- To explore paediatric habilitation issues for deaf children
- To acquaint students with the role of other professionals and paediatric audiology service delivery within the NHS.
Intended Learning Outcomes
Students will be able to:
- Describe the milestones for a normally developing child
- Outline communication development for hearing and deaf children
- Describe the causes of deafness in children
- Discuss the effect of deafness on the development of children, both at a young age and in the school situation
- Understand the principles of hearing screening and their application with regards to neonatal and school screening
- Demonstrate an understanding of the range of paediatric hearing tests, both screening and diagnostic, the testing procedures and appropriate techniques related to these
- Describe how to take a history for different ages of children
- Interpret a range of test results and understand their implications; understand how the developmental age of a child may affect the results
- Use the history and test results to construct a management plan
- Discuss early intervention options for deaf children
- Outline the principles of hearing aid selection, fitting, verification and evaluation
- Discuss the management of glue ear in children
- Explore issues around communicating with families and other professionals
- Describe the roles and relationships within the Paediatric Audiology team, and the multi-professional approach
- Outline current research areas in paediatric audiology
Teaching Information
This Unit will be taught using a combination of lectures, workshops, case study, seminars and presentations.
