Description including Unit Aims

To provide students with the underpinning practical knowledge, skills and professionalism to carry out simple oral surgical procedures

Intended Learning Outcomes

  • Treatment plan patients appropriately for straightforward oral surgical procedures taking into account medical history, pain and anxiety management and complexity of treatment
  • Deliver effective local anaesthesia using appropriate techniques for oral surgical procedures
  • Prepare for an oral surgical procedure using appropriate cross infection control measures and personal protective equipment
  • Complete straightforward extractions of erupted teeth, including erupted wisdom teeth, and retained roots
  • Complete simple surgical extractions of retained roots by applying surgical principles
  • Describe and manage a range of post-operative complications of dental extractions
  • Relay post-operative instructions to a patient effectively following an oral surgical procedure

Assessment Information

Two clinical competency work based summative assessments of performance in the clinical sessions, one at the end of each of terms 2 and 3 of this 1 year course (20% each - 40% in total)

A summative e-assessment at the end of the course (40%)

A summative review of a clinical portfolio (20%)
