Description including Unit Aims

This unit aims to extend and further develop skills of independent reading and interpretation of literary texts in Latin. The texts covered will amount to 700-900 lines from one or more authors. These texts will be studied from the persepctive of their generic, thematic, or historical significance, as evidenced by close reading of texts, and by consideration of commentaries and secondary literature. Authors covered may include: Apuleius, Catullus, Cicero, Horace, Livy, Lucan, Lucretius, Juvenal, Ovid, Petronius, Plautus, Propertius, Sallust, Seneca, Statius, Tacitus, Terence, Tibullus, Virgil.

Intended Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this unit students will be able to:

1. demonstrate skills in constructing coherent and relevant critical arguments, in relation to the understanding and appreciation of the texts studied, appropriate to level H/6
2. demonstrate skills in reading, translating and interpreting a Latin text appropriate to language level C1
3. articulate an understanding of current debates about the texts studied, and their historical and cultural significance;
4. display skills in written communication appropriate to language level C1

How much time the unit requires

Assessment
The Board of Examiners will consider all cases where students have failed or not completed the assessments required for credit.
