Description including Unit Aims

This module will develop the knowledge and skills introduced in Prosthodontics 1 relating to the planning and construction of implant supported fixed and removable prostheses. The prosthetic stages and options offered by different implant systems will be covered in detail.

Intended Learning Outcomes

  • To have a knowledge of the stages involved in the construction and delivery of definitive fixed and removable prostheses.
  • To be familiar with prosthetic options available to patients.

Teaching Information

Lectures and small group teaching on study day 10. Distance learning package delivered via Blackboard including additional ‘podcast’ lectures/videos and directed reading. This unit runs concurrently with the Clinical Practice attachment Unit and is closely linked with it, teaching is therefore supplemented by one to one teaching and observation of clinical practice.

Assessment Information

Formative assessment

During the study day via direct verbal feedback.

Practical assessment:

Hands on practical exercise 1: chairside impression techniques for the laboratory construction of an implant-supported removable prosthesis
Hands on practical exercise 2: chairside impression techniques for the in-mouth pick-up of the retentive components of an implant-supported removable prosthesis

Summative Assessments

Written assignments:

1. Clinical prosthodontic techniques - CADCAM. Written assignment looking at clinical techniques involved in the provision of prosthodontic solutions. 50% of unit mark

2. Clinical prosthodontic techniques -removable. Written assignment looking at evidence base for the provision of removable prosthodontic solutions. 50% of unit mark

To include laboratory stages – fixed and removable and CADCAM.

Total 100% of unit marks.

Submission date will be given to students verbally and on Blackboard.
