Description including Unit Aims
Students will have a sound knowledge and critical understanding of the principles underlying radiography and radiology, and be able to use critical evaluation to solve clinical problems.
The aims of this unit are:-
- To revisit the core of knowledge in dental radiography as approved by the council of the British Society of Dental and Maxillofacial Radiology with an emphasis on remit and scope of practice of the Dental Therapist.
- To equip the student with theoretical and practice experience in the referral criteria, taking, processing and interpretation of intra and extra oral radiographs.
- To ensure the student receives adequate training as specified in the ionising radiation (Medical Exposure) regulation (IRMER) and includes the effects of ionising radiation on the tissues and the importance of quality control and quality assurance.
- To provide students with detailed teaching in diagnostic radiology as relevant to their specific areas of practice within Dental Therapy.
Intended Learning Outcomes
- Be competent at taking and processing the various film views used in general dental practice.
- Be competent at identifying anatomical features and interpreting common pathology.
- Have knowledge of the hazards of ionising radiation and regulations relating to them, including radiation protection and dose radiation.
- Be familiar with the principles, which underlie dental radiograph techniques.
- Be familiar with the assessment of image quality.
- Be familiar with alternative imaging techniques

Summative
Unseen 1 hour written examination, comprising short answer questions.
Formative
Students attend a placement in the Dental Radiography Department where they record their clinical practice via log books and this is assessed by the Radiographers.
