Description including Unit Aims

Aim: To develop a portfolio of core skills to underpin a successful research career.

Intended Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of the unit, the students will be able to: undertake an original research activity, plan and prepare a concise, written technical report, orally present a technical subject, including handling questions and tailoring technical and specialist knowledge and information to a broader audience, and adopt a high standard of record keeping and management of information.

Teaching Information

The teaching method will be in the form of individual lectures from the faculty members, group-discussions, tutorials and presentations coordinated with help of students and teaching staff.

Assessment Information

A report on literature review on a specific topic relevant to composite materials, individual oral

presentation on the report. Numerical modelling using Mat lab and Finite element (FE) methods. The details

of the assessments and weighting for each assessment is as follows

a) Journal Club: Summary/Project proposal: 10%, deadline wk 12
b) Numerical Skills, Basic Exercises: 20%, deadline wk12
c) Numerical Skills, Project model: 30%, deadline wk 23
d) Literature Review: 40%, wk 23

Reading and References

Relevant journal papers will change every year. However these will be made available to students beginning of the course.
