Description including Unit Aims

This unit will explore:

  1. what it means to be a disciple of Jesus today by providing an introduction to Christian ethics and spirituality with a particular focus on themes related to the Sermon on the Mount;
  2. traditional spiritual disciplines (such as prayer and giving);
  3. the spirituality of life together (including coping with conflict);
  4. principles of Christian moral reasoning and some key contemporary ethical debates.

Intended Learning Outcomes

On completion of the unit, students will have:

  1. a deeper understanding of the pattern and challenges of Christians discipleship;
  2. studied biblical teaching on different aspects of discipleship;
  3. developed a broader awareness of different Christian traditions in spirituality and ethics;
  4. learned how to relate the teaching of the Sermon on the Mount to their own lives and to leading

Christian communities in discipleship and mission today.

Teaching Information

The unit will be taught by a mix of lectures and seminars with lectures involving a variety of teaching methods and opportunities for interaction and group discussion.

Assessment Information

Formative assessment is through participation in seminars.

Summative assessment will be either through:

1. one assessment equivalent to a 2,000 word essay, (100%) or 2. two assessments comprising:

  • one essay of 1,000 words (50%) and
  • one other task, such as a response to a moral case study, a theological reflection on a personal experience, a sermon or a book review (50%)
