Description including Unit Aims

This unit is designed for international students with English as a foreign language, who have met the University's minimum English language entry requirements for Engineering and wish to develop their competence in English for specific academic purposes.

Students will develop their awareness of:

• the structure and content of a laboratory report
• the language of a laboratory report
• referencing and citation
• data description and interpretation
• academic style and vocabulary
• the need for adaptability to requirements of different audiences

Intended Learning Outcomes

At the end of the unit, students will be able to:

1. Identify and produce linguistic and organisational features of lab reports;
2. Plan, write and revise a well organised lab report in an appropriate academic style;
3. Evaluate own learning;
4. Edit written work effectively (self and peer).

Teaching Information

Combination of synchronous and asynchronous sessions based on Blackboard VLE involving practical task based work. This will focus on the development of the student as an idependent thinker, who can notice the features of a target text and apply this to work in their own field.

Assessment Information

Formative assessment: Students will work to improve an initial lab report based on learning each week in class. (ILOs 1-4) (40%)

Submission of the final lab report (1000 words) (ILOs 1,2,3,4) 60%
