The aim of this unit is to engage students in extending their applied research project proposal assessed within the unit Business Analytics Consulting Project. Students will be required to discuss the proposal and the resultant feedback with their academic supervisor. The aim is to encourage students to reflect upon their proposal and make improvements upon it. They will build on the knowledge and skills acquired in the Business Analytics Consulting Project unit and other units of the programme to develop their proposal into a coherent programme of research to achieve a clear set of objectives and provide solutions to a real-world problem. They will collect and analyse data and make evidenced recommendations, presenting the resultant work to identified stakeholders in a dissertation format.
On completion of this unit, students will be able to:
ILO 1 - Reflect upon feedback and make appropriate amendments to aspects of the applied research project as necessary.
ILO 2 - Formulate and execute a coherent programme of research to achieve a given set of research objectives, through a critical analysis of a research problem and academic literature and with appropriate considerations of ethical issues including research ethics process and considerations.
ILO 3 - Justify and use appropriate research methods in the collection and analysis of data.
ILO 4 - Communicate, discuss, and synthesise results and conclusions to identified stakeholders in a dissertation format.
ILO 5 - Critically evaluate research and practical implications of their work.
The unit structure is based on a classic graduate project supervision scheme with 5 contact hours for individual supervision provided on a one-to-one basis to assist students with project completion. The remaining 595 learning hours will be spent on independent study and in the preparation of the applied research project submission.
Applied Research Project dissertation (10000-12000 words) (100%)
Students are required to review the feedback on the proposal submitted for the Business Analytics Consulting Project unit (ILO 1). They are required to address the issues identified and then formulate and execute a coherent programme of research in business analytics based on a critical analysis of a research problem and literature and with appropriate consideration of ethical issues (ILO 2). Students will select and justify proper research methods in the collection and analysis of data based on knowledge and skills acquired in other units (ILO 3). They are then required to analyse and interpret results and present conclusions in light of the research objectives and discuss research/practical implications and recommendations in a dissertation format (ILOs 4-5).

How much time the unit requires
Each credit equates to 10 hours of total student input. For example a 20 credit unit will take you 200 hours
of study to complete. Your total learning time is made up of contact time, directed learning tasks,
independent learning and assessment activity.

Assessment
The Board of Examiners will consider all cases where students have failed or not completed the assessments required for credit.
The Board considers each student's outcomes across all the units which contribute to each year's programme of study. If you have self-certificated your absence from an
assessment, you will normally be required to complete it the next time it runs (this is usually in the next assessment period).
The Board of Examiners will take into account any extenuating circumstances and operates
within the Regulations and Code of Practice for Taught Programmes.
