Description including Unit Aims
This module will cover the following subjects; Law, Ethics and Professionalism. Basic Sciences including general histology, general anatomy and physiology, general pathology, oral and Dental anatomy, oral and dental embryology and histology, oral physiology, medical histories medical conditions of oral significance medical emergencies. All students will attend induction lectures on first aid including CPR. The sessions include practical demonstration and practice on models.
Aims:
- to provide an introduction to the fundamentals of biomedical sciences with relevance specifically to the working practice of dental hygiene.
- to provide necessary tuition in the pre-clinical setting which will make the student ready for the practice of dental hygiene on the patient.
- to promote an awareness in the student of the legal and ethical obligations of the practice of dental hygiene .
- to provide the necessary tuition in the clinical setting which will give the student the basics of clinical competence.
- to foster a positive attitude to working as a valued member of the dental team.
Intended Learning Outcomes
- To have knowledge of anatomy, physiology and biochemistry relevant to dental hygiene; have knowledge and understanding of those aspects of the biomedical sciences and of oral physiology and craniofacial, oral and dental anatomy that are significant in the management of their patient.
- To have a knowledge of oral and dental prevention in relation to dental hygiene

OSCEs
- Formative assessments are carried out throughout term to guide students and tutors on student progression.
- These take the form of written tests, OSCEs, clinical tasks on phantom heads and viva voce.
- The summative assessments are weighted; 50% written 50% clinical practical assessment. All essays are allocated 30 minutes under exam conditions. A word count is not untaken for each essay, although a guide for students to follow is 600 words per 30 minute essay.
