Description including Unit Aims

During this module students will conduct a research-based project on a topic related to the field of translational cardiovascular medicine. The students can choose if they wish to do a laboratory based ‘wet’ research project or a ‘dry’ literature, research or data analysis project. This unit aims to teach students to design and conduct good quality research in the field of translational cardiovascular medicine. Candidates will be able to select a project topic offered from a range of potential projects. This module aims to introduce the student to research methods and presentation and topics will range from practical laboratory based projects to critical literature reviews.

Intended Learning Outcomes

Students successfully completing this module will be able to:

  • Undertake a literature search in their field of study within the area of translational cardiovascular medicine.
  • Design and undertaking a research project (either ‘dry’ literature based or ‘wet’ laboratory based).
  • Critically analyse research data and present findings.

Teaching Information

  • Self-directed study
  • Discussion with project supervisor
  • Laboratory experiments in the case of experimental research projects

Assessment Information

Short research proposal (10%)

Critical literature review or laboratory based or dry project contributing 70% to the module mark

Oral presentation/viva session contributing 20% to the module mark.

Reading and References

References will be relating to each one of the topics of the research projects that will be given and students will be guided to this via their individual specific project supervisors.
