Description including Unit Aims

Fluids: An introduction to the fundamental behaviour of fluids and basic analysis techniques required by the engineers. This includes the study of: fluid statics; basic concepts such as Eulerian and Lagrangian approaches; the qualitative assessment of flow behaviour such as turbulence and separation; similarity and dimensional analysis; quasi-one-dimensional approximations such as Bernoulli's equation and cross stream variations; control volume analysis in simple flow situations and the basics of 2D potential flow theory.

Thermodynamics: Introduce students to the basics of thermodynamic properties and behaviour of engineering systems. This includes the thermodynamic properties of gases, 1st and 2nd laws of thermodynamics and how these apply to cycles of common engineering machines.

Intended Learning Outcomes

ILO1 Have gained a qualitative feel for the way fluids behave.

ILO2 Define and use thermodynamic and fluid terms.

ILO3 Solve problems related to thermodynamic machines.

ILO4 Apply the continuity and momentum equations of fluid flow to a variety of situations of interest to engineers.

ILO5 Demonstrate an understanding of the strengths and weaknesses of engineering models and the role of assumptions in modelling

Teaching Information

Teaching will be delivered through a combination of synchronous and asynchronous sessions, which may include lectures, practical activities supported by drop-in sessions, problem sheets and self-directed exercises.

Assessment Information

8 formative online tests (ILO1,ILO2, ILO3,ILO3,ILO4,ILO4,ILO5,ILO5)

2 hour timed assessment (100%) (ILO1-5)
