Description including Unit Aims

A year of approved study in Education studies, Psychology, in the wider social sciences, or in arts and humanities, in a designated partner university with which the School has links.

Intended Learning Outcomes

Specific learning outcomes will depend on the institution selected and the units studied. However, it is anticipated that students may also benefit from the following:

  • Knowledge of Education studies or Psychology in a non-UK context;
  • Knowledge of broader topics in social sciences, arts and humanities including a language;
  • Experience of different teaching and study methods and styles; and

The opportunity to broaden horizons and be immersed in a new and exciting environment.

Teaching Information

Teaching will depend on the host institution and the units selected.

Assessment Information

Assessment will clearly depend on the host institution and the units of study selected. We think it unlikely that they will encounter an entirely new form of assessment while overseas, but to the extent this happens we see this as part of their new learning experience. Students will be expected to select units of study at a level equivalent to 120 UoB Level I/5 credit points and choices will be overseen and approved by the School Study Abroad Academic Director. Assessment results from the host university will be translated via the University's mandated Marks and Credit Conversion system, with oversight from the School Study Abroad Academic Director.

Resources

If this unit has a Resource List, you will normally find a link to it in the Blackboard area for the unit. Sometimes there will be a separate link for each weekly topic.

If you are unable to access a list through Blackboard, you can also find it via the Resource Lists homepage. Search for the list by the unit name or code (e.g. EDUC20015).

How much time the unit requires
Each credit equates to 10 hours of total student input. For example a 20 credit unit will take you 200 hours of study to complete. Your total learning time is made up of contact time, directed learning tasks, independent learning and assessment activity.

See the Faculty workload statement relating to this unit for more information.

Assessment
The Board of Examiners will consider all cases where students have failed or not completed the assessments required for credit. The Board considers each student's outcomes across all the units which contribute to each year's programme of study. If you have self-certificated your absence from an assessment, you will normally be required to complete it the next time it runs (this is usually in the next assessment period).
The Board of Examiners will take into account any extenuating circumstances and operates within the Regulations and Code of Practice for Taught Programmes.
