To develop an understanding of aeroelastic behaviour of aerospace, civil and mechanical structures, covering static and dynamic aspects of attached and separated flows. Content Instabilities of non-aerodynamic self-excited systems Static aeroelasticity 3D wings – divergence/control reversal Unsteady aerodynamics – Wagner & Theodorsen functions Flutter 3D Wings: binary flutter, solution of flutter equations, frequency matching, control surface flutter, flight flutter testing. Prediction of flutter speed from flight test results. Non-linear aeroelasticity – stall flutter, buffet, buzz, Limit Cycle Oscillations, affect of structural non-linearities, aeroservoelasticity, transonic effects, vortex shedding Gusts – simple gusts analysis. Kussner and Sears functions. Discrete tuned gusts Aeroservoelasticity – loads alleviation and flutter suppression.
On successful completion the student should be able to:- 1.1 Determine criterion for stability of systems subject to follower forces 1.2 Perform divergence and control reversal calculations 1.3 Predict onset of flutter for binary systems 1.4 Predict flutter onset based upon sub-critical measurements 1.5 Understand the effect of unsteady aerodynamics on aeroelastic calculations 1.6 Understand the effect of non-linearities on aeroelastic behaviour 1.7 Perform experimental aeroelastic measurements and perform relevant analysis
