Description including Unit Aims

This unit examines in detail a formative period of Latin American history from both a European and an indigenous perspective. After a brief introduction to the European background to the discoveries, students will focus on the following main themes: the emergence and development of the Inca and Aztec states; the conquests of Peru and Mexico; the impact of conquest on native culture, religion, and society; missionaries and Spanish evangelization; early colonial society; the development of colonial culture.

Intended Learning Outcomes

Successful students will:

  • be knowledgable about a significant cultural, historical or linguistic subject related to the language they are studying;
  • will have advanced skills in the selection and synthesis of relevant material;
  • be able to evaluate and analyse relevant material from a significant body of source materials, usually in a foreign language, at an advanced level;
  • be able to respond to questions or problems by presenting their independent judgements in an appropriate style and at an advanced level of complexity;
  • be able to transfer these skills to other working environments, including postgraduate study.

Teaching Information

1 weekly lecture hour and one weekly seminar hour

Assessment Information

1 3000 word essay (33%) and a 2 hour exam (67%)
