Description including Unit Aims

This unit aims to introduce students to a range of skills in independent reading and analysis of Latin literature. Students will also be introduced to the different resources available for self-directed interpretation; lexica, translations, commentaries and word search tools. Emphasis will be on close analysis of specific passages, exploring the different links between grammatical understanding of the language and literary appreciation of the work of art. Texts of moderate difficult will be chosen; authors might include Catullus, Cicero, Livy, Ovid, Virgil, or Cornelius Nepos.

Intended Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this unit, students will be able to:

1. Demonstrate knowledge of Latin vocabulary at the standard of level B2
2. Identify and discuss Latin morphology and syntax as appropriate to level B2.
3. Demonstrate skills of independent reading and prepared translation, with reference works, of Latin texts as appropriate to level B2.
4. Undertake at-sight translation of unseen Latin texts, without reference works as appropriate to level B2.
5. Demonstrate knowledge in the use of dictionaries, commentaries, or scholarship, and be able to relate this knowledge to their understanding and interpretation of a Latin text.
6. Demonstrate skills in working collaboratively
