This mandatory 20-credit unit forms part of the International Pre-Master's Programme (IPP), which explores the way in which subject knowledge is communicated in English across a range of disciplines at and beyond Master’s level. Students will leave the programme fully equipped with the knowledge, skills and attitudes needed to succeed at this level at a top British university and the confidence to communicate ideas with academics, peers or the public.
This unit explores the difference between descriptive and evaluative writing when reacting to different texts. In particular, it aims to introduce and practise: reading strategies and critical questioning skills; listening strategies and note-taking skills;academic vocabulary; factual summaries of data, text and lectures; critical reviews of data, text and lectures.
At the end of this module students will be able to: recognise and recall the meaning of words from AWL sub-lists 1 and 2; use a range of strategies for taking notes from academic texts and lectures; distinguish fact from opinion; write a critical review including description and evaluation.
Learning will be facilitated in small classroom groups(12-16)with a lot of individual and small group work. Students will be expected to use materials and interactive tools made available on the Blackboard VLE.
This mandatory 20-credit unit involves:
Developmental e-portfolio (50%) containing 8 short summaries and vocabulary records;
Academic Vocabulary Test (10%);
Timed reading/listening test (20%);
Timed written response to reading/lecture (20%).
