Description including Unit Aims
This Unit of Teaching will be offered as a Compulsory Unit as part of the PG Certificate in Clinical Conscious Sedation with Anxiety Management. This unit has the following aims:
- To provide the knowledge, skills and attitudes required for the basic practice of conscious sedation in dentistry
- To prepare the clinician for the independent practise of basic conscious sedation techniques in dentistry
Intended Learning Outcomes
Knowledge and understanding:
Students will be able to:-
- Describe the underpinning core knowledge relevant to the basic practice of conscious sedation in dentistry including the relevant:-
Anatomy
Physiology
Clinical Pharmacology
- Discuss and demonstrate the assessment and treatment planning of patients who require conscious sedation
- Describe and explain the techniques of inhalation and intravenous sedation
- Explain the clinical and electromechanical monitoring of patients treated with basic sedation techniques
- Demonstrate an understanding of current guidance in relation to sedation in dentistry
Skills and attributes:
Students will be able to:-
- Complete the assessment and treatment planning of patients requiring basic conscious sedation
- Obtain valid consent, and follow appropriate procedures for patients unable to consent, as outlined in current legislation
- Demonstrate basic administration of conscious sedation using:
- inhalation sedation with nitrous oxide
- intravenous midazolam
- oral / transmucosal midazolam
- Monitor a patient both clinically and electromechanically during conscious sedation
- Assess and safely discharge patients who have received conscious sedation
- Manage the complications of conscious sedation
- Explain the importance of conscious sedation in the management of pain and anxiety in dentistry
- Demonstrate appropriate communication skills in the management of patients requiring conscious sedation for dentistry
- Demonstrate a critical and caring approach to the management of the anxious dental patient
- Demonstrate the ability to manage patients as part of a clinical team

Assessment Information
This Unit will have the following four components of summative assessment: -
- Satisfactory completion of supervised clinical practice including Directly Observed Procedural Skills (DOPS) assessments (50%)
- A reflective case study (2 500 words) or online assignments (10%)
- Assessment of the management of a simulated complication of conscious sedation (10%)*
- A final written examination comprising Multiple Short Answer and e-Assessment questions of 2 hours’ duration (30%)
The clinical activity, reflective assignments and formative assessments will be recorded in an e portfolio. This will include the assessments 1 & 2 above
- This assessment is included as it is a professional requirement that dentists are required to be able to manage the complications of the drugs they administer.
