Description including Unit Aims

For students enrolled on the Supplementary Year only.

This unit deals with written language for academic purposes, and independent research skills enhancements, in particular those related to essay research and writing skills (although not exclusively). Students will learn how to (i) research and produce written assignments incorporating data in an appropriate academic style; (ii) develop advanced written language skills required for effective participation in all academic contexts, including discipline-appropriate research skills, writing style, appropriate grammar and punctuation, and argument structure; (iii) appropriate use and citation of e-resources and other references

Teaching Information

Normal delivery expectations for this unit are:

20 hours of discussion-based classroom teaching

20 hours of tutorial teaching (group and 1:1): Bi-weekly group tutorial (10 hours total): Progression checks on the acquisition and application of advanced written language skills for effective written submissions (including but not exclusively research skills, writing style, appropriate grammar and punctuation and argument structure) 1:1 tutorial focus (10 hours total): Planning and first draft of assessed long essay, including appropriate use and citation of e-resources (including web-based resources) and other references within discipline-specific context

200 hours of independent learning: to focus on independent research in association with the production of the assessed essay. It is expected that this will include emphasis on the acquisition and application of advanced written language skills for effective written submissions noted above. Subject-specific research will also feature, but is not expected to be the primary component of the independent learning.

First draft of c.1500-word essay (20%) Final draft of c.1500-word essay (60%) Oral presentation of essay (20%)

Final draft essay pass mark: 40% Overall pass mark: 40%

Resit arrangements: Re-submission of final draft essay, by date set by and with prior agreement of tutor and department Second presentation session; arrangements as above
