This unit is only taught on the Diploma in Dental Hygiene.

Year 1

This unit introduces the first year student to periodontal disease. Examining how periodontal conditions are classified, before moving on to look in detail at chronic gingivitis and chronic periodontitis. This comprises histopathology, aetiology, clinical features, the basics of periodontal treatment and disease progression.

Aims:

• To understand how and why periodontal conditions are classified
• To gain an understanding of the features of, and treatment for chronic gingivitis
• To learn about the histopathology involved in periodontal disease
• To recognise the clinical features of gingivitis and periodontitis
• To understand the mechanisms involved in pocketing and bone-loss
• To have an understanding of the theories of disease progression
• To recognise other influencing factors in the initiation and progression of periodontal disease.

Intended Learning Outcomes

• To have the ability to describe oral diseases and their relevance to prevention, diagnosis and treatment
• To recognise the clinical presentation of gingivitis and periodontitis
• To be able to explain the aetiology, pathogenesis, and progression of gingivitis and periodontal disease
• To understand the classification system used for periodontal conditions
• To understand the basics of periodontal treatment
• To be able to explain the process of pocket formation and bone-loss in periodontal disease
• To have an early understanding of the indirect and secondary factors which influence the initiation and progression of periodontal disease

Formative:

Open book home assignment - 1 essay (plaque biofilm)

Periodontal Disease

Continuous assessment (CA) on clinic using a predetermined standard assessment scheme, graded with immediate feedback to the student by clinical staff. Reflective Practice – Each student to complete ongoing personal journal/log book/e-portfolio and opportunity to self-reflect and progress discussed with Tutors during and at the end of the Unit.

Students overall performance in the programme will be reviewed and discussed at the School Progress committee.

Failure to comply with completion of formative assessments by the stated end of term deadlines will be raised at the Progress Committee. Any performance not completed or deemed unsatisfactory will be reviewed along with the students overall performance and may affect the students progression. Summative:

This unit has no internal summative assessment. However Periodontal Disease topics can be assessed within Finals examinations for the Diploma in Dental Hygiene.
