This module will involve the student undertaking an independent research project under the supervision of a nominated supervisor within the Department of Oral and Dental Science. The research topic must be related to an aspect of dental Implantology however, this may be interpreted broadly. The student will be required to write a dissertation on the chosen research topic.
To be competent in writing a research protocol. To be competent in conducting a literature review. To be competent in carrying out a supervised research project.
Teaching: The student will be required to meet their supervisor within weeks 1 to 6 of year 3 and submit a written proposal to the Unit organiser by week 12 of year 3. The proposal must be approved by the Unit organiser.
Progress monitoring: It is expected that students will be in contact with their supervisors by telephone and e-mail on a monthly basis, meeting in person if required. The Unit organiser is required to track progress on a regular basis. This will be done by e-mail on a monthly basis. Progress will be assessed against the timetable submitted with the original MSc proposal. Students whose progress is deemed unsatisfactory may be required to attend an interview with the Unit organiser and their supervisor
Methods: Independent supervised research project One to one supervision
Two printed and soft bound copies of the final dissertation must be submitted within a 1 year period from the commencement of the unit of study. This will take the form of a typed (word processed) bound document of not less than 15,000 words. The student must be able to demonstrate an in depth knowledge in the subject researched and the use of appropriate analytical tools reaching conclusions to their work.
An internal examiner will be chosen by the Unit organiser from the School of Oral and Dental Sciences to mark the dissertation based on the subject of the dissertation and the area of expertise of the examiner. The dissertation will be blind double marked by the dissertation supervisor and second internal marker. The final mark will be derived from agreement between both markers following the blind second marking. The external examiner will be given access to all dissertations and marks and will act to moderate the final agreed mark in cases where the internal markers cannot reach an agreed mark.
