The dissertation will consist of a 15000-word study of a topic arising from work already undertaken by students following the MA in Modern Languages. Where students are following a particular pathway within the Modern Languages MA programme, and seeking a named award related to that pathway, the choice of dissertation topic will be relevant to that discipline. Students will be free to choose the subject of their dissertation, subject to the advice and guidance of unit directors and the availability of an appropriate supervisor. Dissertation titles must also be approved by the programme director.
On completion of the dissertation, students will:
a. be able to distinguish between a range of different research methods.
b. be familiar with existing work on a particular subject, and will have used that work in order to provide a focus for independent inquiry.
c. have designed a project that is realistic in scope
d. have gained substantial knowledge of a specific subject area
e. be able to made a sustained argument or intervention, in academic debate and/or in relation to the particular research problem, appropriate to the determined mode of assessment.
f. be able to communicate that knowledge with clarity appropriate to the determined mode of assessment.
