Description including Unit Aims
Year 1:
This unit transfers the clinical skills taught in the CSL to patient management and is based within Bristol Dental Hospital.
Subject areas:-

- Plaque control
- Topical Fluoride application
Clinical practice includes the use and monitoring of periodontal disease and plaque biofilm, non-surgical periodontal therapy incorporating the use of Local Anaesthetics as required and encouraging patients towards healthy oral hygiene regimes.
Aims:
- Students will commence clinical treatment sessions.
- Carry out routine periodontal assessments, supra and sub gingival scaling procedures and oral hygiene instruction. They will be able to deliver treatment under Local Analgesia if required.
- Students will be capable of recognising periodontal health and disease and have a good understanding of oral health education in relation to improving oral health.
- To assure students can work safely, protecting themselves, the patient and other members of the working team.
- To develop abilities in the recognition of needs and management of different patient groups.
- To understand the importance of Professionalism and work well as part of a dental team
Intended Learning Outcomes
- Recognise the importance of and carry out appropriate systematic intra oral and extra oral clinical examination
- Assess and manage the health of periodontal and soft tissues taking into account risk and lifestyle factors.
- Monitor and record changes in periodontal health as necessary using appropriate indices.
- Discuss the need to monitor and review treatment outcomes
- Manage patient pain though the appropriate use of local analgesia – Local Infiltration and Inferior Dental Block
- Provide patients with comprehensive and accurate preventive education and instruction in a manner which encourages self-care and motivation
- Underpin all patient care with a preventive approach that contributes to the patient’s long-term oral health and general health.
- Carry out care as prescribed by the dentist and plan the delivery in the most appropriate way for the patient
- Recognise the importance of and record a comprehensive and contemporaneous patient history
- Implement and perform effective decontamination and infection control procedures according to current guidelines
- Take responsibility for ensuring compliance with current best practice guidelines, maintaining accurate, contemporaneous and comprehensive patient records in accordance with legal and statutory requirements and best practice. Protecting the confidentiality of all personal information.
- To recognise and take account of the needs of different patient groups including children, adults, older people and those with special care requirements throughout the patient care process.
- To recognise psychological and sociological factors that may contribute to poor oral health, the course of diseases and success of treatment. Recognising the health risks of diet, and drugs such as tobacco and alcohol on oral and general health and provide appropriate advice, referral and support.

Teaching will use a blended learning approach delivered through a combination of synchronous and asynchronous activities. Students will be expected to engage with all learning.
Assessment Information
Summative assessment
There is one the unit assessment which must be passed.
1. Periodontal Patient and Local Anaesthetic (100% of unit total)
Students will compile a written case presentation and reflective account of the management of a periodontal patient including use of local anaesthetic
Formative assessment
Students are supported in their learning by a variety of directed formative assessments with which they must engage within this unit. Overall performance will be reviewed and discussed at the School Progress committee at regular meetings x 1 per term.
1. Local Anaesthetic Competencies: For Local Infiltration Anaesthesia (LIA) & Inferior Dental Block (IDB). Students to have completed an unspecified number of supervised LIA and IDB administrations and, when ready, to request competency assessment on clinic with supervisor, for each method of anaesthetic
2. Continuous Clinical Assessment through CAFS e-portfolio of:
- Removal of Dental Deposits
- Management of periodontal disease
- Medical History
- Medical conditions and dental management implications
3. Clinical assessment and student reflection for each patient seen, graded with feedback from staff and patients.
Marks obtained in formative assessments above do not contribute to the overall unit mark but failure to complete by the stated end of term deadlines will be raised at the Progress Committee, and may be a barrier to progression.
