Pre-requisites |
Normally 120 credit points at Level I/5 Physics units. In order to progress in a degree programme with study abroad (and thus spend year 3 abroad), a candidate is required to achieve a sufficiently high standard in the major subject, including practical work (normally obtaining assessment marks of at least 60 in the Level I/5 units). |
Co-requisites |

School/department | School of Physics |
Faculty | Faculty of Science |
This unit comprises the period spent in a partner university, involving work guided on a day-to-day basis by a supervisor at that university and under the general supervision of an academic supervisor based at the University of Bristol, and completion of a research project. In addition there is distance learning via monitored independent study of Core Physics units PHYS30021 Solid State Physics and PHYS32011 Quantum Physics.
Aims:
The aim of this unit is to provide students with additional knowledge and skills derived from spending a period undertaking academic research abroad at the appropriate level.
At the end of the unit the student should have knowledge and understanding of
Students will maintain regular contact with their academic supervisor at their home institution but work full-time under the management of an academic supervisor at a partner institution. The research project would be expected to incorporate significant academic physics content and its undertaking would normally include attending appropriate lecture courses in the host university (where available and not for assessment) and/or directed reading.
Assessment of the project work is on a day-to-day basis by the academic supervisor at the partner university; assessment of placement is by a short interim report and a detailed final report, the first in week 12 and the second by 31st July. Reports will be assessed by both academic supervisors; the distance learning elements are assessed by written examination; an interview is conducted by an academic panel.
See PHYS32011 and PHYS0021. Remaining reading and references to be determined by partner institution.
