Description including Unit Aims

This unit introduces students to:

  • Different approaches to the conceptual design process, and associated design and manufacturing methods, tools and techniques;
  • The nature of design, design fixation, and design thinking, in a socio-cultural and global context;
  • Working as part of a creative design team and the nature of learning to design;
  • Discovery and definition of design problems and requirements through appropriate research;
  • Management of the conceptual design process and evaluate outcomes;
  • Communication of design work to a non-technical audience;
  • Engagement with and reflection upon the open, complex, networked, and dynamic problems of modern society.

Intended Learning Outcomes

  1. Manage a variety of design processes within the freedoms and constraints of real-world problems;
  2. Use a variety of design processes, methods and tools to create and evaluate innovative design concepts;
  3. Critically review and reflect upon the use of different design methods, tools, and frameworks;
  4. Appreciate and reflect upon the nature of design and design knowledge;
  5. Use visual and verbal literacy to communicate design information by written report and oral presentation;
  6. Manage the freedoms and constraints of a real design problem;
  7. Organise a team and manage tasks, scheduling and budgets;
  8. Use a variety of design methods and tools to create and evaluate successful design solutions;
  9. Communicate design information clearly by oral presentation, drawing/model and written report;
  10. Reflect on personal and group design activity, including design process and the use of design methods and tools;
  11. Use a variety of practical tools and techniques to build and test a physical prototype.

Teaching Information

Teaching will be delivered through a combination of synchronous and asynchronous sessions, which may include lectures, practical activities supported by drop-in sessions, problem sheets and self-directed exercises.

Assessment Information

Literature review and design reflection exercise – individual – (ILOs 1-6, 10) (30%)

Design project report – completed in pairs – (ILOs 1,2, 5-9) (30%)

Design build and test project submission – group project – (ILOs 1,2, 5-9, 11) (40%)

Resources

If this unit has a Resource List, you will normally find a link to it in the Blackboard area for the unit. Sometimes there will be a separate link for each weekly topic.

If you are unable to access a list through Blackboard, you can also find it via the Resource Lists homepage. Search for the list by the unit name or code (e.g. CENG20024).

How much time the unit requires
Each credit equates to 10 hours of total student input. For example a 20 credit unit will take you 200 hours of study to complete. Your total learning time is made up of contact time, directed learning tasks, independent learning and assessment activity.

See the Faculty workload statement relating to this unit for more information.

Assessment
The Board of Examiners will consider all cases where students have failed or not completed the assessments required for credit. The Board considers each student's outcomes across all the units which contribute to each year's programme of study. If you have self-certificated your absence from an assessment, you will normally be required to complete it the next time it runs (this is usually in the next assessment period).
The Board of Examiners will take into account any extenuating circumstances and operates within the Regulations and Code of Practice for Taught Programmes.
