Description including Unit Aims

This unit is offered by the Law School primarily for the benefit of Economics and Accountancy students. This unit deals with some basic aspects of English law as it relates to business. The elements studied are: sources of English law, including a brief introduction to law of the EU; the tort of negligence; brief introduction to employment law; and an overview of both contract law and company law.

Intended Learning Outcomes

• Articulate an understanding of the English legal system and the sources which constitute its foundations

• Identify the core legal principles and doctrines which regulate certain of the main functions of businesses

• Critically analyse and assess how the law impacts on businesses in practice

• Develop basic techniques for applying the law to a range of factual scenarios using skills acquired in legal method

• Demonstrate effective oral and written presentation skills.

Teaching Information

Teaching will be delivered through a variety of asynchronous and synchronous activities

Assessment Information

1 x summative assessment: Timed Open Book Assessment with a specified word count (100%)

The assessment will assess all of the intended learning outcomes for this unit.
