Description including Unit Aims

Understanding and appreciating the current literature is a key element of scientific research. The aim of this unit is to foster a scholarly atmosphere were students are routinely reading, understanding and criticising research papers at the forefront of the Centre for Doctoral Training research fields. Papers will be suggested by academic staff and the students will work in groups to analyse the paper and produce a presentation. There will be 10 sessions which run approximately every two weeks (during term/semester time) and the students in each group will take turns to make the presentation.

Intended Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of the unit, students will be able to:

  • critically assess a scientific paper.
  • take part in a critical discussion of scientific work.
  • articulate ideas/knowledge to a scientific audience.
  • demonstrate knowledge in some new areas.

Teaching Information

Students will attend about 10 x 1 hour sessions which will run approximately every fortnight. They will take part in the discussion. Academic staff, PhD students from higher years and post doctoral research fellows will also attend and help with the discussion.
