Description including Unit Aims

This unit is designed to follow on from the intermediate level unit. It provides further development of students’ knowledge of the target language at an advanced level. It is intended:

• To introduce and develop the linguistic structures and terminology which will enable the student to pursue academic goals of their chosen discipline
• To develop and offer practice in specific academic skills such as those necessary for taking notes from lectures, giving oral presentations and writing an extended report on a core subject related topic
• To equip students with the background knowledge which will enable them to integrate quickly in the social, cultural and academic environment of the target language

Intended Learning Outcomes

Students will:

1. be able to communicate both orally and in writing with a higher degree of accuracy and fluency.
2. be able to work at an upper intermediate to advanced level with authentic material and retrieve necessary information.
3. have acquired knowledge and awareness of the general social and cultural background of the target language
4. be able to understand and interpret written texts at an upper intermediate to advanced level
5. be able to respond to written texts at an upper intermediate to advanced level

Overall, students will attain a level comparable to C1 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages.

Teaching Information

3 hours of teaching per week covering all four topics of Reading writing speaking and listening. Classroom based learning is supplemented by online access to resources delivered via Blackboard. Regular formative homework is set.

Assessment Information

The four skills (listening, speaking, reading and writing) are assigned equal weighting for the purposes of assessment (25% each).

• For Speaking there is a Subject Specific Oral Presentation in TB1 (12.5%) and an oral test in Week 23/24 (12.5%). This assesses ILOs 1, 2 and 3.

• For Listening there is a class test at the end of TB2, which comprises 25% of the total mark. This assesses ILOs 1, 2 and 3.

• For Reading there is a formal examination in week 25 (25%). This assesses ILOs 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5.

• For Writing there is a - 2000 word subject specific written project which is prepared in TB1 and produced over the course of TB2 (25%). This assesses ILOs 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5.
