Description including Unit Aims

Healthcare workers are required to originate and use research evidence to inform their practice. This unit will build on the Research Methods and Evidence-Based Healthcare units, either providing participants with experience of undertaking a pilot study in a chosen area of clinical practice and presenting the results, or of carrying out a full assessment of a proposed service development within rehabilitative audiology.

Aims:

This unit will build on the learning from the Research Methods unit, where participants will have reviewed an area of interest and developed a draft proposal for an innovative study within that area of interest, and the Evidence-based Healthcare unit, where they will have formulated a strategy to change an area of practice in the light of new evidence and identified how that strategy will be evaluated.

For the Dissertation, participants will develop one of these areas of work and either engage in an active pilot of research as outlined in the proposal for an innovative study, or make a full assessment of a proposed service development.

Intended Learning Outcomes

Participants will apply learning from previous modules in the course to produce a small innovative study, or a comprehensive review and assessment of a specific area of clinical practice that needs revising / updating, based on current evidence.

Dissertation topics, arising from the two units - Research Methods and Evidence-based Healthcare - will be decided in consultation with potential supervisors and are likely to focus on areas of expertise of staff from within the Centre for Hearing and Balance Studies.
