Description including Unit Aims

Deaf Studies in practice will provide students with the opportunity to relate theory to practice by spending a specified period working alongside deaf and hearing professionals. This will provide students with the personal experience and skills, essential for future work in the field of Deaf Studies. Through observation, research, structured learning and reference to theories already studied (in the taught part of the unit), students will learn about the infrastructure of organisations, the role of professionals within the field, as well as develop an understanding of the service user group. For students on the interpreting stream this placement will provide a two week supervised interpreting placement, working with qualified interpreters in the field.
